Other Earth
_Views of Other Earth (Photography by Chrstopher O'Leary)

Rooted in contemporary philosophies discussing issues of disembodiment, immateriality, deterritorialization, and nomadism, my work is a reaction to my surroundings: our commoditized society, the sprawl of characterless urbanism and its disjunction with nature, and alienation from our ancestors’ knowledge of life and living beings. My focus is to eradicate the lasting impact of our mortality on our natural environment and to promote the use of our technologies to forge a new model for existence in accordance with nature.

The new model, which I call Other Earth, is based on my concept of Tentative Architecture, which is an immaterial architecture that can happen at any time and at any point in space. It is an architecture that is immediately related to the bodies occupying it and does not exist without the presence of one. Other Earth is a plan of urban structure as a rhizome. The nodes of the rhizome consist of individual nomads, living a technologically advanced, self-sufficient, and no-impact lifestyle; nomads who at any moment can break away and exist on their own, wearing their Tentative Architecture on their bodies and allowing their environment to be defined by non-material means.

_Questions of Space / Questions of Evolution

Our bodies and our activities define architecture; architecture facilitates our needs. A space to rest, a space to cook, a space to love, a space to learn. The definition of ‘architecture’ has taken a turn from being a shelter and providing a haven for us from harsh elements, to something that our activities are now confined to and defined by. We need to bring architecture down from its high horse and redefine its status: Architecture exists because we exist. Architecture is an index of the body: no body, no architecture. Architecture cannot and must not exist without the body. Once we remove the physical excess of material architecture, we find ourselves to be bare. We have become accustomed to taking shelter, hiding, secluding and positioning ourselves in our architecture. It is a materiality we have accepted because we all suffer from the same weakness of running away to hide in our architectures. We separate ourselves from each other in it. We divide ourselves up in it. We shut ourselves up in it. We suffer multiple layers of separation from ourselves, each other, our society, humanity as a whole and nature explicitly.

Video Salon

Video Salon is an open community of visual artists representing SF's thriving VJ scene. Video Salon is YOU.

Video artists come together monthly to share ideas, show their work and collaborate with other artists in an informal and social setting. The event is hosted at Dimension7, a San Francisco VJ institution.

We have 3 video mixing stations setup for anyone and everyone to show their own work. Mix video live to the DJs or do your own thing.Video Salon embraces a broad spectrum of time based visual artists including CG artists, experimental film makers, live visual performance artists and installation builders.

Video Salon strives to promote technical experimentation and aesthetic development within our community. We create an open dialog encouraging mutually beneficial critique, cross-pollination and collaboration.

Video RIOT!

Video RIOT! is a special installment of Video Salon. It is an intense collective projection experience, inspired by a five year series of monthly events that cater to the local VJ scene. In 2002 Video Riot brought out an estimated 500 people, over 70 artists and 40 volunteers, 30 projectors, 2 laser crews, 1 intelligent lighting installation, 7 generators and one pirate radio transmitter to a vacant parking lot in SoMa.

A cross between an edgy electronic tailgate party and a real-time drive-in multiplex, Video Riot! showcases San Francisco's homegrown VJ community. Artists create a massive outdoor wall (1 city block wide)of projected images across from the D7 studio. We try to include a broad spectrum of artists including computer graphics artists, experimental film makers, live visual performance artists and new media installation builders to come and show their work. We want to actively promote technical experimentation and aesthetic development within the VJ cmmunity.

Attendees to tune into the simultaneous radio broadcast by DJs, Alaric and Amy O.

VJ Battle

2 Artists head to head on two screens; 1 DJ plays a 3:30 minute track. The first 30 seconds are not judged. At the end of 3 minutes the audience will judge the two artists by using cell phones to send a text message choosing either 1 or 2. A graph will appear on the screen showing the outcome of the votes. The winning artists will advance to the next round.

The audience will judge by:
Composition: How well the images are put together
Original style: Originality is important but original content is not required. There will be a lot of other VJs in the audience voting and most of them know of the commercially released content.
Visual interpretation of the music: Either by algorithmic or human beat mixing, metaphoric or juxposition of content.

2004 VJ Battle, held in conjunction with SIGGRAPH, was sponsored by EDIROL, ATi, Red Bull and IdN magazine.

'vE-"jA VJ BOOK
After 2 years and numerous publisher rejection letters, our book, 'vE-"jA, was finally published December 2006.

vE-jA is a global snapshot of VJing and live audio-video. The book covers 40 international artists with 400+ colour images and 50+ movies and clips on an accompanying DVD and web downloads. Regionally organized, the book showcases VJing and live A/V not as an isolated art phenomenon for geeks, but as a global art movement with sophisticated creators and audiences alike. The organization of the book in this manner has lead to discoveries of the differences and similarities in the devlopment of the art including the influence of specific urban styles, political and social states, cultural influences, as well as hardware and software development and influences in specific regions. Introductory essay by Marius Watz brings forth the role of synchronicity of audio and video technology in cinematic performances; Barry Munsterteiger, Interactive Media Group Senior Designer for Apple Inc., focuses on the role of art in the evolution of technology; Grant Davis (VJ Culture) provides supportive information on VJ specific hardware and software. In addition, essays by contributing artists cover local cultural aspects influencing VJ scenes globally and provide insight on the inflluences and productivity of cities such as London, Helsinki, Barcelona, Tokyo and general scenes of US, Austria, France, Netherlands and Australia.

Xárene has a diverse background ranging from fashion and automotive design to architecture and event production. She takes on anything the situation needs her to: a builder in a range of mediums; a designer without boundaries; and a catalyst funneling anger and despair into creativity.

Fusing concepts of the rhizome, Singularity, and the phenomenology of space, Xárene's current work visits the parallel universe of Other Earth, a nomadic society where the inhabitants’ responsive wearables create tentative architectures within an invisible urban infrastructure. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Design from University of Cincinnati, Department of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, and her MFA from Design|Media Arts, UCLA.
